Oral Hygiene in Foster City, CA
A LIFETIME OF DENTAL FITNESS BEGINS AT Jing-Jing Qian DDS
Keeping our mouths fresh and clean is a routine many of us complete quite simply. Brushing and flossing in the morning, and after meals or snacks, and before sleeping has become a routine for many of us. But no matter how much home care we do, routine cleanings by a dentist or dental hygienist are still vital for our oral hygiene.
Plaque is a white, sticky film that builds up on our teeth every 24 hours. Plaque removal leaves your mouth clean and fresh and is done by following these three simple steps:
Brush morning and evening with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride-containing toothpaste. Be sure to focus your brushing where the tooth meets the gums and brush in a circular motion.
Floss once a day, preferably in the evening before bed. Use the C-technique while flossing. Gently work the floss between each tooth and bend the floss into a “C” shape. Move the floss up and down two to three times on each surface to be cleaned. Do this between each tooth.Rinse with a mouthwash that has been recommended for your individual needs.
While brushing and flossing remove a portion of the bacteria-filled plaque from your teeth, the plaque still finds many hiding places in between the teeth and under the gums where your brush and floss cannot reach. Over time, this hidden plaque hardens into a calcified substance known as “calculus” or “tartar”. Once calculus hardens on your teeth or under the gums, only a dentist or a dental hygienist can remove it. Most people develop calculus that must be professionally removed about every six months. Some may need professional cleaning even more often. Dr. Jing-Jing Qian will examine your teeth and determine how often you should have routine cleanings.
